I have a question about differential gears and carriers. I bought a used AMC20 and Dana 30 with 4.10 gears. When I turn the yoke on the AMC20 it turns so far and the stops. I pulled the cover off and the pin in the carrier between the spider gears looks worn. I have the axle on a set of stands with the pinion facing the ground. The carrier will turn so far and then stops, like it is bound. Does this mean the carrier is shot or ???? I don't know enough about differentials so I thought I would ask. Any help would be appreciated.

Are the axles and drums on???? Are the brakes dragging???? Is there teeth broke off from any of the gears that it might be hanging up on????? Is the pin flush at both ends of the carrier?????

The axles are on. The drums are not. The brakes aren't dragging (axles spin). There are no broken teeth on the either the ring or pinion. I'm not sure about the pin being flush. If it isn't flush, what do I need to do?

I'll try to take a couple of pictures later this morning.

The pin is flush on each end. When I turn the axles, the spider gears turn, but the pinion may or may not turn. If it does turn, it doesn't go very far until is seems bound on something.

Gears look good, might check the bearings.

Thanks. That's what someone suggested. I'll let you know.
